Welcome to the beautiful Oregon Coast![]() This region is chock full of things to do and see. Almost every mile has something intriguing waiting for you, and this guide is your key to opening its treasures. Whenever possible, we pinpoint points of interest at mileposts along the highway. There are also city pages that summarize what you’ll find in each community. In November 2005, the State Historic Preservation Office announced that 11 Oregon Coast bridges had been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They were all designed by Conde B. McCullough, the Oregon Highway Department’s bridge engineer from 1919 through 1935. Read our descriptions of each of these historic bridges as you drive across them on Highway 101. Although a number of state parks have been officially renamed as “state recreation sites,” or “state scenic corridors,” most people are familiar with them just as “state parks.” We have generally kept the old names. We often do not show the area code in phone numbers. The area code is 503 from Astoria to Neskowin, 541 from Lincoln City to the California state line, and 707 in Del Norte County. For mileposts, we use the actual markers alongside the highway. In Oregon, they start at 0 in Astoria and reach 363 at the California-Oregon state line. The actual mileposts may not match your odometer because of changes that have taken place since the numbering system was established. We use new numbers as we continue along Hwy 101 into California until the Del Norte County line just beyond the Klamath River. Del Norte County is an “honorary” part of the Oregon Coast, so that we can include all of America’s Wild Rivers Coast, which encompasses the Sixes, Elk, Rogue, Pistol, Chetco, Winchuck, Smith, and Klamath rivers of Curry and Del Norte counties. |
