Reedsport
Reedsport is the major city in western Douglas County. Prominently situated on the edge of town, the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area headquarters share the same building. Area information, recreational opportunities, natural history exhibits, and an 11-minute video are available. Also worth visiting in town include the Umpqua Discovery Center with its impressive dioramas that connect the history of all the people who have lived in the area with the influence of the Umpqua River. It is located on Hwy 38, east of Hwy 101 on the river. The Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce hosts more events and festivals than any other in Oregon. Visitors come to Reedsport for such events as the Memorial Day weekend celebration, Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Sculpture Championships in June, Ocean Fest in July, DuneFest in August, and the Tsalila: The Umpqua River Festival in September. Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is rich with wildlife and lush pastures, meadows, and woodlands about 3.5 miles to the east on Hwy 38. Roughly 100 Roosevelt elk find their home there. Known as the "Heart of the Dunes," Reedsport and Winchester Bay is home to the tallest dunes on the Oregon Coast. Each year, off-road vehicles, such as atvs and sandrails, explore those dunes, as well as hikers and horseback riders. Located just north of Reedsport is the Umpqua River Bridge, the state’s largest swing span bridge. Designed by famous bridge engineer Conde McCullough, this type was used because the crossing here was too wide for a drawbridge. What a sight it is to see the span swing open at its axis for a passing large fishing vessel.
